Symbiosis: from pixels to paint

Like two sides of the same coin, sisters are often alike and completely different at thesame time, and the work of the two sisters in this exhibition is no different.

Symbiosis brings together the work of photographer Katie Brumberg and oil painter Annie Heisey, highlighting a years-long conversation between Katie’s photographs and Annie’s interpretation of them into oil paintings.

Katie Brumberg is a professional photographer based in State College, PA, who has spent years documenting the lives of her children, high school seniors, newborns, and families with her keen eye for beautiful light and her trusty cameras. Her sister, Annie Heisey, is an oil painter based in Pittsburgh, PA, who creates oil paintings of everyday people and places in ways that make them seem extraordinary, using unusual color combinations and imagery. For years Annie has drawn inspiration from Katie’s photographs of her niece and nephews, reinterpreting them into fantastical scenes where children talk to birds and sleep under blankets of flowers.

Symbiosis brings the photographs and paintings together for the first time in an exploration of the artistic process and the different ways two creative minds interpret the same scene.
